Nature Explore Classroom

at the Maharishi School

3rd Year Certification

A whole new dimension of edible landscaping was added to Maharishi School this year with the installation of the new permaculture feature.

A “hands-on” workshop experience taught by permaculture experts was held which included over 60 parents. The school is working with Dimensions Educational Research Foundation on a research project to incorporate plantings into the classroom to determine how integrating permaculture into Nature Explore Classrooms will influence children’s positive bond with nature.

During the winter months, teachers engaged children in activities to increase their awareness of animal habitats, with the goal that children will begin to see the interconnectedness between nature and themselves. Based on children’s responses to simple questions about bird and animal food and habitat, the landscaping was designed to incorporate their ideas. A bird blind is being added to observe the birds in the “forest” habitat while brush piles were added to the area for shelter.  Many edible shrubs and trees were added to feed the birds over the winter.  The children’s environment was extended to include a fruit orchard.

Through daily immersion in the space and helping with the design and planting of the space, the children are provided with opportunities to deeply observe and learn about the complexities of nature and to fully appreciate nature.

Parents watch and interact with their children and teachers in the morning while socializing with each other and discussing the new learning skills they see their children acquiring.  Many bring their children back to the Nature Explore Classroom after school and on weekends to “their space”.
